Gas nearing $4 a gallon

No Comments 29 March 2011

Mixed emotions. I love the idea of gas prices going up. I feel like gas should cost more considering the negative impact it has on the atmosphere, the air pollution, and global impact of refining it from crude oil. In other parts of the world gas has been considerably more expensive for a long time. I think the higher prices have encouraged other countries to be more tuned in to the impacts of transportation and energy consumption. Expensive gas makes people think about how much they use.

Several years ago I had the idea that I wanted to get rid of all our gas powered things. We sold our only car, then our lawn mower. We had never owned a gas powered weed-trimmer or the multitude of other power tools people often feel they need. All the motorcycles and mopeds of my youth were long gone. I know we still buy things that have used gas in manufacturing and delivery almost everyday but not having to buy any makes me happy.

I remember when I was a 13 year old, I needed gas for my moped. I would siphon it from my dad’s truck often enough that I still know what gasoline tastes like. Now as a 44 year old, I check the gas prices at oregongasprices.com just to see them climbing – always hoping that more people will give bicycling a try.

High gas prices will have so many other effects. I can’t begin to imagine.

New Bike Rack Installed

No Comments 08 September 2009

Just this last week – as part of Bike Commute Challenge – we installed a new bike rack in the front yard of Organic Haus. We are also beginning to set up a rain water catchment system with four 55 gallon barrels. And we are beginning planning to convert more of our front yard into more of a berry patch or herb garden or both. We may even plan a stone patio as a place to sit our and enjoy the gardens. The bike rack is set-up just in time for the Car Free party coming up on September 19th. We hope to see you here for that.

Summit Jumping

On Father’s Day 2009 we rode out of the house around 10am. We rode on two bikes – the Bike Friday Triple with Burley Piccolo attached to the back and the Seven Xtracycle with Burley D’Lite attached for kid back-up options. We ended up taking the trailer/stroller all the way to the top of Spencer Butte. We had a TV crew stop us on the climb and interview us about what we were doing for DAD. They got some good video of us climbing up the mountain. http://www.kval.com/news/local/48734472.html

We had a great ride and the whole day was perfect. I couldn’t have hoped for anything better that this!

International Press: Gaining Momentum

No Comments 11 May 2009

Here is a fun one pager in the new issue of Momentum magazine. It is about our family and it even has a half page picture of us – one that was taken the morning we had 3 young touring bikers (warmshowers) stay at our place – just after waffles – the kids are still in their pajamas. Take a look at Momentum Magazine. I think this is the best magazine going right now for bike culture.
